Trump’s Maginot Line

The French post-WWI defensive line was touted as an impenetrable state of the art defense against Germany. The builders unfortunately overlooked one small vulnerability that Hitler took advantage of. The Luftwaffe simply flew over it, bombed the bejesus out of France, and Adolph soon marched into Paris.

Writing this on the morning of the big Trump birthday bash disguised as a military parade I see our strutting American Mussolini’s wasteful and vainglorious gesture as more than just an insult to the nation and to our military but as a reminder of that iconic French blunder. Fearsome as our forces may appear to be, they are becoming outmoded and useless in the face of emerging combat technology and strategy.

Recent assaults in Russia and Iran succeeded by bypassing traditional military defenses, smuggling into those countries armed drones right under the noses of their commanders.

The best defense against such attacks would be to maintain state of the art intelligence–FBI, CIA and Homeland Security. Even as a puffed up Trump reviews the troops in his Maginot line, the agencies really needed for our protection are being defanged by incompetent leadership and decimated by ill conceived firings of critical staff.

The nation is ripe for surprise attack from within like the ones carried out by Ukraine and Israel over the past few weeks. And getting riper.

My mind this Saturday morning, however, is filled with fantasies of a more pleasurable type. How lovely it would be if no spectators showed up for the parade. Better yet if a patriotic general ordered his marching troops to make a detour up to the VIP reviewing stand to haul Donny, Vance and their entire cadre of rogues into custody and march them off to a military prison. Better yet, if God finally answered our invocation of His blessings on our land. The forecast is for thunder storms. Hey, God,! Prove you truly bless America by tossing a lightning bolt smack dab on the party hat of the birthday boy.

No such luck, I’m sure. We will wake up Sunday to a very alive Trump who will boast about the”huge” crowds who showed up to witness millions of dollars being effectively flushed down the national toilet. The military, of course, cannot and should not stage juntas. As for God? As usual, He’ll be AWOL, off, no doubt, to a galaxy far, far away where some intelligent life forms, oh so superior to us, will make far better use of His blessings.

  1. Another great post, Norm! I hope you will submit it, as a Letter to the Editor, to several newspapers.
