Minutes after this decrepit, bumbling, old man stumbled into bed last night, an even older man took the floor to deliver his State of the Union address. I watched it this morning with great trepidation.
This official kick-off of his 2024 presidential bid was a make or break moment for the President. Everyone knew it. He could confirm the vicious propaganda of the political right or shove it back into their faces. He had to speak forcefully, unhesitantly, not make the little gaffs he is often derided for. He had to project power, energy and a scrappy determination to prove he may be old in years, but has the will and the verve to continue to lead. He had to mince no words about the challenges the nation faces from the extreme MAGA wing of the GOP and its treasonous leader, how they have betrayed their sacred pledge to support and defend the Constitution and thrown sand into the gears of government. Biden had to challenge them to do the right thing by the nation and the world. He had to throw their taunts back in their faces using humorous barbs. He had to make clear what he has accomplished despite their resistance and what he intends to do once, by the grace of God, these cowardly con-artists are banished from high office by the American people.
Even the spineless House Majority Leader seated behind Joe could not conceal the fact that he knew the President spoke truth. The sight of Marjorie Taylor Greene, “resplendent” in her MAGA paraphernalia only underscored how far her party has fallen under the spell of a low class criminal con man who has only self-enrichment at heart, who cares not one whit for anyone other than himself, who would throw his country and strongest supporters under the bus for a few pieces of silver. Clown-like, Greene was a vision of the depravity and ignorance to which the party of Trump have fallen. Let us hope she and her cult leader soon sink into the oblivion that they so deserve.
Wonder of wonders, Joe pulled it off. In spades. It has been a long while since I was so encouraged about the future prospects of this man who has been unjustly vilified and mischaracterized by his scurrilous opponents, the press, foreign actors contaminating social media and the billionaire tech owners of those media themselves.
It has been a long while since I have been so encouraged about the prospects of the nation he so well represented in his address.
I hope all the potential voters who have not been paying attention to reality all these years, who have lost their idealism and common sense in the dark recesses of the ever distracting and deceiving devices that they waste the precious moments of their lives scrolling through, at least stumble upon some snippets of the speech that they all should have watched in its entirety.
Last night Joe Biden launched the campaign upon which the future of America and the free world depends. He did what he had to do and what one hopes he will continue to do until November.
Let us hope he does and that it will be enough.
